MUSIC

Charanga Music

We aim to develop children’s enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of music through dedicated music sessions delivered by the class teacher. In these lessons children follow the Charanga Music School programme. The units of work enable children to understand musical concepts and develop skills through repeated practice. Learning about the same musical concept through different activities ensures a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

Over time, children re-visit established musical skills and concepts while building on these to deepen their understanding. Within each lesson children will:
  • Listen to and appraise music and songs, including well-known pieces from a wide range of genres, historical periods and countries.
  • Take part in a range of musical games and activities. These activities are based around a song and include singing, clapping, playing instruments, improvising and composing with the song using their voices and/or tuned instruments.
  • Learn and perform a song, with the chance to share their performance at the end of each unit.
All children have the opportunity to learn the glockenspiel as part of the Charanga programme.

Beyond Charanga

All children engage in class, year group and whole school singing sessions. Children are provided with opportunities to listen to music, work with visiting musicians from a variety of cultures and to explore instruments from around the world. Children have the opportunity to perform to an audience in both solo and ensemble contexts, and music is incorporated into other events and performances across the year groups.

All children learn to play unpitched percussion instruments in class, and peripatetic music teaching is available for children in Year Two.

Musical activities are often linked to other curriculum areas; children are encouraged to listen, compose and perform, including opportunities to create music digitally using computer software and iPad apps
